Kansas City is taking big steps to re-energize its downtown and streetcar corridor with a new initiative designed to open doors—literally and figuratively—for property owners, entrepreneurs, and artists.
The Open Doors! Program, led by the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC) and the City of Kansas City, Missouri, is offering grants and lease incentives to activate vacant storefronts in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
What the Program Offers
-
Up to $10,000 in grants for small businesses and artists who are ready to launch a pop-up or short-term storefront.
-
Lease-subsidy stipends for property owners with underutilized spaces in Kansas City’s downtown and streetcar-line districts.
-
The opportunity to bring more activity, visibility, and investment into some of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods.
According to the Kansas City Star, the initiative aims to transform empty spaces into thriving storefronts that reflect the creativity and entrepreneurial energy Kansas City is known for. The program also positions local business owners and landlords to benefit from the global spotlight as the 2026 World Cup draws millions of visitors to the area.
